One of the most common questions we get when starting a conversation with our clients is; What social media platform(s) should I use for my business/organisation? We get it, it is very confusing and you might think ‘why not being on all of them’ so I can reach more people?’
We say, less is more if you're doing those well. But most importantly… where does your current audience hang out? And who is it that you would like to attract to your product and services?
To help you along the way, here is a list of the most commonly used social media tools used today and who's using them.
This is probably by far the biggest social media platform of all time after YouTube and has 2.4 billion users a month. (*October 2019)Facebook is great for businesses big and small but also organisations and charities. Here you can create events, tag other businesses, easily share posts and create ads to increase exposure.
- Facebook has 2 billion monthly active users worldwide and 15 million in Australia.
Twitter is a ‘micro-blogging’ platform and is highly popular with journalists, academics, charities, a not-for-profit organisation, politicians, and companies who frequently write blogs and reports.
- Twitter has 317 million monthly active users worldwide. 4.6 mn in Australia.
Linkedin is a great platform for ‘business to business’ (B2B) connections and lead generation for entrepreneurs, businesses, government bodies and not-for-profit organisations and charities.
- LinkedIn has 106 million monthly active users (450+ registered users). 4.5 million in Australia.
Instagram was originally created in 2010 as a photo and video sharing platform. Since then it has been bought by Facebook and an additional video channel, IGTV, has been added. The move gained popularity among brands and influencers as it is searchable. Clickable links can also be inserted. This platform is great for bloggers, retail, small entrepreneurs, but also for big brands.

If you are a shop or a brand especially selling to women, this might be the place for you, as more than two-thirds of Pinterest users are women. According to Pinterest, 55% of Pinterest users are looking for products and 83% of weekly users have made purchase-based decisions on the content they see on Pinterest.
